Professor David R Owens, CBE MD FRCP FIBiol

Professor Owens has been involved in the field of diabetes, both treatment and research,
for over 30 years and is the Director of the Diabetes Research Unit, Llandough Hospital,
Cardiff, UK. For over 20 years he has been involved with a long-term study on the
pathophysiology and natural history of type 2 diabetes. His contined interest in
macrovascular complications of diabetes has instigated the development of the all-Wales
Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service, of which he is the Clinical Director.
His early insulin studies were published as a single author book "Human Insulin". He has
a strong interest in novel therapies has has written reviews on insulin analogues and on
alternative routes of insulin administration. Professor Owens is a Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Institute of Biology.
